What is the Family Paws Training Package?
This is a specialised training and education package developed specifically for families with dogs and babies, toddlers or young children, delivered by a Family Paws qualified trainer.
Family Paws Parent Education is an internationally recognised program that has been supporting new and expecting families since 2002. It focuses on increasing safety and reducing stress in homes where dogs and young children live together, with an emphasis on understanding dog body language, preventing risky situations, and creating a household environment where both your dog and your children can thrive.
Our package draws on the two core Family Paws programs:
Dogs and Storks for families who are expecting or have a newborn up to around three months of age, and Dogs and Toddlers for families with babies approaching mobility through to toddler age.
What We Cover
Every package is tailored to your family’s situation. Depending on where you are in your journey, sessions may include:
- Preparing your dog for the sights, sounds and smells of a new baby
- Teaching your dog calm, appropriate behaviour around babies and children
- Setting up your home environment so both dog and baby have safe, comfortable spaces
- Understanding canine body language and the early warning signs of stress
- Safe introduction techniques when bringing your baby home
- Managing your dog’s routine as your household changes
- Practical strategies for supervising dogs and young children together
- Helping your dog adjust as your baby grows and becomes more mobile and unpredictable
Why Early Preparation Matters
Dogs are creatures of routine. When a baby arrives, their world changes completely. Sleep patterns shift, the household gets busier, and a small, unpredictable person starts taking up a lot of the attention they once had.
Starting training before your baby arrives gives your dog the time they need to adjust gradually, without the pressure of the actual event. The earlier you begin, the smoother the transition for everyone.
Each week in Queensland, an average of 18 children under 14 are treated at hospital emergency departments as a result of dog incidents. Most of these situations are preventable with the right preparation, supervision and understanding of dog behaviour.
